Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement?

One of the most important Medicare decisions is choosing how you receive your Medicare coverage. Here’s how the two paths differ.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)Original Medicare + Supplement
How it worksAn all-in-one plan from a private insurance company that replaces Original Medicare.Original Medicare pays first, and a Medigap policy helps pay what’s left.
DoctorsUsually a network (HMO or PPO). Check that your doctors are included.Any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.
Monthly premiumOften low or $0, on top of your Part B premium. You pay a premium for the Supplement, plus Part B.
Costs when you get careCopays and coinsurance, up to a yearly out-of-pocket maximum. Most costs are covered, depending on the plan letter you choose.
PrescriptionsMost plans include Part D drug coverage.Add a separate Part D plan.
ExtrasMany plans include dental, vision and hearing benefits.Generally not included.
TravelCoverage outside your area may be limited to emergencies.Works anywhere in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.

Plan benefits, premiums and networks vary by plan and by county. I’ll show you the actual plans available where you live.

Avoid costly mistakes

What I check before you enroll.

Late penalties

Signing up for Part B or Part D late, without other creditable coverage, can mean a penalty that lasts for as long as you have that coverage.

Your doctors

I confirm your doctors and hospitals are in the plan’s network before you choose a Medicare Advantage plan.

Your prescriptions

I run your exact medications and pharmacy through each plan, so you see what you’ll really pay.

Yearly changes

Plans change every year. Each fall I review your Annual Notice of Change with you and compare it to what’s new.

Questions

Common Medicare questions.

Does it cost anything to work with you?

No. My help is free. I’m paid by the insurance companies, and your premium is the same whether you enroll with me or on your own.

Can I keep my doctors?

With a Medicare Supplement plan, you can see any doctor who accepts Medicare. With Medicare Advantage, most plans use a network, so I check your doctors against each plan before you choose.

When can I change my Medicare plan?

Most people switch during Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7. If you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can also make one change from January 1 to March 31. Some life events, like moving or losing other coverage, open a Special Enrollment Period.

Do I need a Part D plan if I don’t take any medications?

Often, yes. If you go without Part D or other creditable drug coverage when you’re first eligible, you may pay a late enrollment penalty for as long as you have Part D.

When is the best time to buy a Medicare Supplement plan?

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months and starts the month you’re 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During that window, insurance companies can’t turn you down or charge you more because of your health.

What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement?

Medicare Advantage plans replace Original Medicare with an all-in-one plan from a private insurance company, usually with a provider network, copays and a yearly out-of-pocket limit, and often drug, dental and vision coverage. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy works alongside Original Medicare to help pay deductibles and coinsurance, lets you see any provider nationwide who accepts Medicare, and is usually paired with a separate Part D drug plan.

Can you help me sign up for Medicare Parts A and B?

Yes, at no cost. I’ll walk you through applying for Parts A and B, including the timing and forms if you’re leaving employer coverage, so your coverage starts on time.

Could I qualify for Medicaid or extra help with costs?

Possibly. I review your situation for Medicaid, Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help with drug costs. If you qualify, it can lower your premiums and out-of-pocket costs and open up more plan choices.

Do you only work with people in Florida?

No. I’m licensed in Florida, Georgia and Texas, and I help clients throughout all three states.
