Medicare in Texas
What’s different about Medicare in Texas.
Medicare Parts A and B are the same in every state, but plan choices, Medicare Supplement rules and help with costs depend on where you live. Here’s what Texas residents should know.
Medicare Supplement under 65Disability or ESRD
In Texas, people under 65 who have Medicare because of a disability can buy Medicare Supplement Plan A. If you have Medicare because of End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS and became eligible on or after January 1, 2020, you can choose from more plans, including Plans A, B, D, G, K and L, and Texas limits what companies can charge you.
Help paying Medicare costsMedicare Savings Programs and Medicaid
Texas Medicare Savings Programs can help pay your Part B premium and, for some people, other Medicare costs. You apply through Texas Health and Human Services.
Plans in your countyMedicare Advantage and Part D
Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county, so what’s available in one part of Texas can differ from another. I compare the plans in your ZIP code against your doctors, prescriptions and pharmacy.

Under 65
Individual and family health insurance in Texas.
Where to enrollOfficial Marketplace
Texas residents use HealthCare.gov, the federal Marketplace. Income-based tax credits are only available through the Marketplace, and I can help you compare plans and enroll there.
2027 Open EnrollmentStarts November 1, 2026
Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027 on HealthCare.gov. Enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1.
MedicaidNot expanded
Texas has not expanded Medicaid under the ACA, so many adults under 65 with low incomes don’t qualify for Medicaid. If your income is at least the federal poverty level, you may qualify for Marketplace tax credits instead.

Questions
Common questions from Texas clients.
Do you charge for your help in Texas?
No. My help is free. I’m paid by the insurance company you choose, and your premium is the same whether you enroll with me or on your own.
Can you help me if I just moved to Texas?
Yes. Moving to a new state usually gives you a Special Enrollment Period to change your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, and it’s a good time to review your Medicare Supplement too. Call me soon after your move so you don’t miss the window.
Do we have to meet in person?
No. Most clients meet with me by phone or video, and I can meet in person when that works better for you.
Is there a Medicare Supplement “birthday rule” in Texas?
No. Texas doesn’t have a birthday or anniversary rule for Medicare Supplement plans, so outside your open enrollment period or a guaranteed-issue situation, you may have to answer health questions to change plans.
