Income-based savings

How ACA tax credits lower your premium.

Many people who buy their own coverage may qualify for financial assistance. Eligibility depends on factors such as household income, household size and other requirements.

Premium tax creditsLower monthly premium

A tax credit based on your expected household income for the year. You can have it paid directly to your insurance company each month to lower your premium, or claim it when you file your taxes.

How the amount is setBased on a benchmark plan

Your credit is calculated from the cost of a benchmark Silver plan in your area and how much you’re expected to pay based on your income. You can use it on any Bronze, Silver or Gold plan.

Cost-sharing reductionsLower deductibles and copays

Households with qualifying incomes can get extra savings on Silver plans, with lower deductibles, copays and out-of-pocket maximums.

Reconciling at tax timeKeep your estimate current

The credit is based on your income estimate. If your income changes during the year, update it with the Marketplace so you don’t owe money back when you file.

Metal levelsBronze, Silver, Gold

Bronze plans have lower premiums and higher costs when you get care. Gold plans are the reverse. Silver sits in between.

No need to wait

You may be able to enroll now.

Outside Open Enrollment, you can sign up if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, usually within 60 days of a life event. I review your situation to find out if you qualify.

Questions

Common Marketplace questions.

Does using an agent cost more?

No. Marketplace premiums are the same whether you enroll with me or on your own, and my help is free.

How do I know if I qualify for savings?

Savings are based on your expected household income and household size for the coming year. I’ll estimate what you qualify for and show you plans with those savings applied.

Can I keep my doctors?

Every plan has its own network. Before you enroll, I check your doctors and prescriptions against the plans you’re considering.

What if my income changes during the year?

Report the change to the Marketplace as soon as you can. Your savings are adjusted, which helps you avoid owing money back at tax time.

Do I have to wait for Open Enrollment?

Not always. If you’ve had a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, moving, getting married or having a baby, you can usually enroll within 60 days of the event. I’ll review your situation to see if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Will subsidy amounts change next year?

They can. Income limits and credit amounts are set by federal law and can change from year to year. I’ll check what applies to you for the year you’re enrolling in.

What happens when I turn 65?

When you become eligible for Medicare, Marketplace financial assistance generally ends. I’ll help you understand your Medicare enrollment options and plan the transition so you can avoid a gap in coverage.
